60 Miles with Sara: Slow and steady

Training Update

Since my first 60 Miles with Sara post, I’v clocked 26 training miles, which brings me to a grand total of 56 training miles — almost the full distance of the Komen 3-Day!

Overall, training is going well. Most of the time, I have no problem getting outside and walking on the days I’m supposed to, but I sometimes struggle to complete the mileage goal for that day — mostly due to the heat (it’s July in Texas, y’all) and the pesky pain I’m experiencing in my left arch and calf at the beginning of most of my training walks. On one walk in particular, the pain was worse than I’d experienced before, and I was scared to push myself for fear of a muscle injury that would take me out of training for at least a week, so I stopped.

60 Miles with Sara: Getting started

Back in April, I made the decision to walk to the Dallas/Ft. Worth Susan G. Komen 3-Day.

When I signed up, all I knew about the 3-Day was from social media, tear-jerking TV and radio ads, and my aunt’s training and event experience from several years prior. Eager for a new (big) challenge and inspired by my mom’s very recent breast cancer journey, I made the decision to walk in the DFW 3 Day, which will take place on November 6-8.

Before my first information session, I knew the basics: walk 60 miles in 3 days, train for the event, camp in a pink tent, raise some money. Now, after a few information meetings, a few training walks, lots of questions asked to my awesome teammates/mentors/veteran 3-day warriors, I’m on my way!
